- Back It Up! Installing hardware and software often seems straightforward, but as we all know from painful experience, things all too easily can go haywire. Back It Up, in this respect, is like buying insurance: It will protect you from forever losing your important files. Back It Up helps keep your data safe by compressing and archiving the files that you choose. When something goes awry with your files, you can go back to the previous snapshot of your system. There are options that allow you to delete specified files by choosing the files' extension. You can also schedule backups to run unattended. Windows XP, 2000, ME, NT, 9.x.
- Back4Win - "Back up hard drive often" isn't glamorous enough to make anyone's New Year's resolution list, but often it's important enough to make the list pale by comparison. Back4Win lets you customize your backup so your PC's downtime is minimized. Its variable compression rate gets the best backup speed for every supported OS. It lets you make disk-spanning files and restore damaged backups, too. The free version of Back4Win contains no spyware or advertising. However, it also lacks some of the features (such as automatic backup) of the paid version, Back4WinXP. Windows XP, 2000, ME, 9.x.
- Backup Maker - Before you make major operating system changes and add peripherals, it's always a good idea to back up your files. This integrated scheduler lets you perform backups at regular intervals. You can select whether you want to make a backup every time Windows starts, every few start-ups (you specify how many), or every few days. New features include more scheduling options and backup file compression. Windows NT, 9.x.
- Cobian Backup handles the most tedious parts of this chore without taking away your options. Let this utility to back up files and directories automatically on the schedule you choose--without losing the ability to back files up manually. You can keep everyone else up to date on recent changes by backing up not only to your own PC and others on its network, but to your FTP server. - EZBack-it-up doesn't ask you bewildering questions--it just backs up your data where and when you tell it to do it. It can compare thousands of files in mere seconds. - Karen's Replicator - Automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Karen's Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network. Files larger than 2 GB are supported. Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of file deletions. New features allow you to specify which files should not be copied, and also which days a file should be skipped!
- My Own Backup - Avoid having to use multiple disks to make a typical data backup. This free program can make compressed backups of documents, graphics, system files, and other files, and can store them on any media (Zip, CD-R and CD-RW discs, floppy and more). The Windows Explorer-like interface allows you to select files with ease, and a backup log helps you keep track of each transaction. Backups are done in "Sets": You can back up all of your data at one time, or break it down into specific categories. If you're working with sensitive files, you can encrypt your compressed backup, and assign it a password. As with most programs, you can have this utility back up at certain intervals, or drag and drop files manually. Windows 9.x.
- PolderBackup lets you back up your data in .zip format. You can select all your data, or you can exclude certain files. PolderBackup can do incremental backup, so you back up only what's changed. PolderBackup is free--but if you like the program, you can donate to Polderweg Animal Welfare shelter. Windows XP.
- SyncBack - No one can deny the need for backing up your files, but cumbersome programs turn it into a chore. SyncBack simplifies the process while offering a number of options and features. SyncBack integrates with Windows Scheduler so you can schedule automated backups easily. You can back up or sync your files to another drive, directory, or network. SyncBack creates detailed HTML log files for your review and (using MD5) verify that files are copied correctly. - ConfigBack - Microsoft Configuration Backup for Windows 95. - Use this utility to back up your Registry files (system.dat and user.dat) before you make any serious changes to your system. ConfigBack can store up to nine backup levels. This is the same version of ConfigBack included on the Windows 95 CD-ROM; it was omitted from the Win 95 floppy.
- Keep-It - Never again suffer that sinking feeling you get when someone in your committee remembers their favorite document detail from three revisions ago. Keep-It can automatically archive documents in compressed files. You can prevent certain file types from being archived, so you get (for example) every version of the Word doc, but none of the identical accompanying image files. Keep-It can be set to automatically take "snapshots" of files, making sure you keep every version you need. Keep-It archives take up far less of your hard drive room than the original files do. - MBRtool lets you back up, restore, and manipulate just about anything in the hard disk MBR and track0. You can edit partition tables and change attributes for partitions. You can also re-create a MBR from scratch. All actions can also be performed on MBR backups, making this tool useful for recovery purposes. - MozBackup is a utility for creating backups of Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and Netscape profiles. It allows you to backup mail, favorites, contacts, etc. This program is freeware.
- OE Backup maintains Outlook Express message archives and registry entries. The developer acknowledges that its appearance isn't pretty, but it does the job - Free! Windows XP, 2000, ME, 9.x.
- Personal Folders Backup for Outlook, so frequently used, so frequently infested with worms. This add-in will help you backup your Outlook files to minimize your losses if something goes awry. The Personal Folders (.pst) files include your Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, and other things you don't want to lose. - Norton Zip Rescue - When disaster strikes and your system won't boot, you may need more tools than what will fit on a floppy. If you have an EIDE Zip drive, you can replace that stack of disks with one Zip that will get your system up and running. With Norton Zip Rescue you can find and fix common problems such as Windows Registry corruption, partition table damage, virus contamination, missing or damaged system files, or boot record damage. Your custom Zip Rescue Disk is unique to your system; it contains a condensed version of Windows, the Norton Zip Rescue software, and a record of your desktop settings. (Your desktop settings indicate how your icons and toolbars are organized, as well as other things such as your background and screen saver.) - StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back, and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus. StartupMonitor does not require Startup Control Panel, but it complements it nicely. When you choose not to allow a program to register itself, the program's entry becomes disabled in Startup Control Panel, so you can go back and enable it later if necessary. StartupMonitor watches the Start Menu's Startup folders and the Run entries in the registry. Runs on Windows 98/98SE/ME, Windows NT4.0/2000/XP, does NOT function with Windows 95.
- StartupRun utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows boots. For each application, additional information is displayed (Product Name, File Version, Description, and Company Name), in order to allow you to easily identify the applications that are loaded at Windows startup. if StartupRun identifies a spyware or adware program that runs at startup, it automatically paints it in pink color. In addition, you are allowed to Edit, disable, enable and delete the selected startup entries.
